I really love old trains…

There used to be a narrow gauge railroad, the Carson & Colorado Railway, that ran along the east side of the Owens Valley, starting in northern Nevada, and running south to Keeler, a mining town on the eastern shore of Owens (Dry) Lake (between Lone Pine and Death Valley). The tracks were pulled up and scrapped around the early 1960′s, due to improvements in the highway system, and changes in the materials that are mined in the area. This Train Depot is one of the last of this railroad that is still standing. Laws, just outside of Bishop, CA, is another. The Carson & Colorado Railway is currently restoring the “Slim Princess” Engine from that era.

Keeler is not technically a “Ghost Town”, but it has definitely seen better days. There is still some mining being done in the hills east of town, evidenced by the big rig trucks hauling chemicals/ore to their destinations, but the town seemed very deserted on the cloudy Monday afternoon when I was there.

These are the second story office windows of the Depot, so the grass you see is really tall…the former location of the tracks is completely overgrown with trees and tall grass like this. A desk lamp can be seen through the window, so it is possible that the building may have had other uses since the removal of the tracks, but the current condition of the building (which can be seen in my other images of the Depot) makes it unlikely that it is in use now.
